2001 Toyota Echo Air Bag Parts Q&A
Q: How to safely dispose of a side Air Bag assembly on 2001 Toyota Echo?
A: All side Air Bag assembly disposals must start with deploying the Air Bag first by using Special Service Tool: 09082-00700 (SRS Air Bag Deployment Tool) in an open outdoor space with at least a 10 m (33 ft) distance between the assembly and the deployment location. Deployment of the Air Bag results in a loud sound while the assembly stays extremely hot so waiting at least thirty minutes before touch. All maintenance personnel should wear gloves and safety glasses during the process while hand washing in water but should never allow water contact with the deployed Air Bag. The first step is to uninstall the seatback assembly together with the side Air Bag assembly which should rest with its deployment-facing side up. Secure the assembly with 2 nuts through a service-purpose wire harness having 1.25 sq.mm (0.0019 sq.in) minimum cross-section by wrapping it tightly around the stud bolts. Place the assembled unit inside one redundant tire with deployment direction toward the inner part and confirm wire harness security to evade loosening during deployment. The side Air Bag assembly connector requires Special Service Tools 09082-00700 and 09082-00750 installation without securing the secondary lock because doing so would damage the equipment. Lay two tires under and over the assembly with tight binding through two wire harness connections which should maintain at least 1 m (3 ft) of wire slack length. Deploying the Air Bag requires users to connect the red clip of the Special Service Tool to the battery positive terminal and the black clip to the negative terminal immediately before activating the switch when no personnel remain within 10 m (33 ft) of the deployment zone. Before disposal, extract the assembly from the tire and then place it into a vinyl bag before tightly tying the bag before discarding it as regular garbage.
