2001 Toyota Sequoia Brake Caliper Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The first step to service and repair the brake caliper requires front caliper disassembly. Start by removing the 4 cylinder boot set rings and boots through screwdriver usage. Begin by setting a wooden plate among the pistons that will serve as a holder then place one pad on this plate. The piston extraction process requires compressed air while avoiding putting fingers in front of the pistons. Use a screwdriver to take out the 4 piston seals which are located inside the cylinder. Check pad lining thickness using a ruler since the recommended thickness is 11.5 mm (0.453 inch) but the minimum is 1.0 mm (0.039 inch); replace the pad if it meets the minimum requirement but demonstrate uneven wear. Measure the disc thickness using a micrometer when the hub nuts are temporary in place. Standard thickness is 28.0 mm (1.102 inch) and the minimum is 26.0 mm (1.024 inch). Replace or grind the disc if results show either minimum or scoring or uneven wear. A dial indicator assessment of disc runout should be conducted at 10 mm (0.39 inch) from the outside edge where the maximum allowable runout is 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch); if excess runout is detected remove and resurface the disc either through "On-Car" brake lathe operation with appropriate front hub bearing play maintenance completed beforehand. To improve disc runout you should remove the hub nuts then the disc before reinstalling it 1/6 rotation off its starting position and tightening hub nuts to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). The runout measurements need to be remeasured while noting results and disc position on hub in order to readjust the disc until minimum readings are below maximum permitted runout. Installation occurs at this point or a new disc must be substituted. The reassembly procedure consists of putting back components in the reverse order with lithium soap base glycol grease applied to specified parts.
