2008 Scion xB Axle Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to reassemble the axle shaft assembly on 2008 Scion xB?
A: Start your front drive shaft assembly rebuild process by inserting a new drive shaft bearing into the drive shaft bearing case through the use of Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 along with 09951-00710 in conjunction with a press before adding a new bearing case snap ring using a screwdriver. The inboard joint RH receives the drive shaft bearing case by using Special Service Tools: 09527-10011 and 09710-04081 until the case reaches full depth before adding a new drive shaft hole snap ring with a snap ring expander. Use Special Service Tool: 09726-40010 and 09527-10011 to press in new front drive shaft dust covers at 1 mm (0.039 in.) from their specified position while carefully repeating this procedure for the right-hand and left-hand dust covers. The outboard joint boot installation procedure requires you to first install a new hole snap ring on the LH side then apply vinyl tape around the outboard joint shaft spline to protect the boot before moving forward with the specified boot and clamp installation order while packing the boot with 190 to 200 g (6.7 to 7.1 oz.) of grease. Boot clamps must be properly positioned on their respective locations and then secured so they do not harm the boot material. Place the front drive shaft damper LH along with its clamp by maintaining correct positioning at 161.0 to 165.0 mm (6.339 to 6.496 in.) distance. Engineers must install the front drive inboard joint assembly LH with the beveled side of the tripod axial spline directed toward the outboard joint and matchmarks set correctly before using a brass bar and hammer to touch the drive shaft without touching the rollers. Install a new shaft snap ring and apply grease between 175 to 185 g (6.2 to 6.5 oz.) inside the inboard joint shaft and boot before moving to the RH side. Screw the inboard joint boot to its corresponding positioning on the inboard joint while avoiding grease contact on the outboard joint shaft groove before applying the inboard joint boot clamps on both sides. The front drive shaft assembly needs final inspection to check its dimensional accuracy along with joint looseness and search for cracks and grease or damage leakage.
