2006 Toyota RAV4 Speed Sensor Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the wheel speed sensor on 2006 Toyota RAV4?
A: The first step to repair or service the wheel speed sensor is disconnecting the negative battery cable for at least 90 seconds to avoid triggering Air Bag and seat belt pretensioners. To begin repairs and services on the wheel speed sensor start by removing both the rear wheel and the deck trim side panel assembly LH from the vehicle. Start the sensor repair through connector removal of skid control wires then extracting the wheel house grommet followed by bolt A and sensor clamp B coming out from the side member and finally separating the 2 nuts C with their sensor clamps D from the upper arm. The carrier requires the removal of its bolt E along with the sensor clamp F before disconnecting the skid control sensor wire connector G from the speed sensor. Unfasten the rear disc brake cylinder mounting LH followed by rear disc and rear axle hub and bearing assembly LH. Mount the front axle hub into a soft jaw vise before using a pin punch and hammer to remove the 2 pins which detach the 2 attachments from Special Service Tool. Apply Special Service Tool 09520-00031 (09520-00040) and 09521-00020 and 09950-00020 in combination with the 2 bolts with dimensions 12 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm pitch to eliminate the skid control sensor from the hub and bearing but protect the contacting surfaces from scratches. Installation requires cleaning both the speed sensor and axle hub contacting surfaces before positioning the speed sensor onto the hub in a high placement of its connector and using Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 to press it in. The Lawn-side rear axle hub and bearing should be installed first followed by the addition of the rear disc and rear disc brake cylinder mounting LH. Determine point A by connecting the skid control sensor wire connector to the speed sensor while using bolt C (labeled B) to secure the sensor clamp with 8.5 N.m (87 kgf.cm, 75 in.lbf) torque and avoid twisting the wire. Hi-Lite assembly the two sensor clamps (D) using nuts (E) to reach 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf) torque. Continue by installing the sensor clamp (F) using bolt (G) at 8.5 N.m (87 kgf.cm, 75 in.lbf). Pass the connector and grommet into the wheel house passage hole but leave the grommet band clamp on the exterior side of the vehicle before pulling the grommet from inside to outside without touching the sensor wire. Reinstall the rear wheel at 103 N.m (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft.lbf) torque and substitute the cable to the negative battery terminal before checking the speed sensor signal.
