2007 Toyota RAV4 Speed Sensor Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the wheel speed sensor for the skid control sensor on the LH side on 2007 Toyota RAV4?
A: The first step when servicing or repairing the wheel speed skid control sensor on the LH side requires disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal then letting it rest for at least 90 seconds to avoid Air Bag pretensioner and seat belt activation. First disconnect the rear wheel and then remove the deck trim side panel assembly located on the left-hand side. Start by disconnecting the skid control sensor wire connector then remove its grommet from the wheel house and take out bolt (A) and sensor clamp (B) from the side member and the 2 nuts (C) and sensor clamps (D) from the upper arm and the bolt (E) and sensor clamp (F) from the carrier. Start by unplugging the skid control sensor wire connector (labeled G) from the speed sensor and thereafter remove the rear disc brake cylinder mounting LH, the rear disc and finally the rear axle hub and bearing assembly LH. Before using the front axle hub, mount it in a soft jaw vise unless you must replace the hub and bearing due to dropping or experiencing strong impacts. Use a pin punch with a hammer to remove the two pins before taking off the two attachments from Special Service Tool. Special Service Tools: 09520-00031 (09520-00040) 09521-00020, 09950-00020 and the 2 bolts with specifications of (diameter: 12 mm; pitch: 1.5 mm) are used to extract the skid control sensor from the hub and bearing. Work methodically to prevent damage to the contacting surfaces. Place the speed sensor onto the axle hub with its connector at maximum height position while using Special Service Tool 09214-76011 to pressurize the insertion into the hub and bearing. Begin the procedure by installing the rear axle hub and bearing LH followed by installing the rear disc then the rear disc brake cylinder mounting LH. The skid control sensor wire connector (A) must be connected to the speed sensor before attaching the sensor clamp (B) with bolt (C) at 8.5 N.m (87 kgf.cm, 75 in.lbf) torque while avoiding sensor wire twisting. Use the 2 sensor clamps (D) with nuts (E) at 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf) and set the sensor clamp (F) with bolt (G) at 8.5 N.m (87 kgf.cm, 75 in.lbf). Guide the connector and grommet through the wheel house hole but maintain the grommet band clamp outside while drawing it out from inside to outside while keeping the sensor wire away from hand contact. Connect the skid control sensor wire connector before installing the deck trim side panel assembly LH as well as the rear wheel which needs to be tightened to 103 N.m (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft.lbf). The speed sensor signal testing can commence after reconnecting the cable to the negative battery terminal.
